4 Reasons Why You Need Travertine in your Garden

19 November 2019

Travertine. An ancient stone typically used in construction but making a big comeback in modern luxury spaces, and a go-to material for many of Urban’s hardscapes. If you have visited any of Dubai’s 5 star hotels over the past few years there is a high chance you have walked on a travertine floor or stood next to a travertine cladded wall. But you don’t need to be a construction giant or landscape architect to recreate beautiful travertine finishes in your own garden. Due to its natural composition, it is incredibly versatile. Here’s how.

1. It Stands the Test of Time

Travertine is a natural stone deposited by geothermal-heated hot springs. Historically, it was primarily used for building temples, ancient bath complexes and monuments. No one can argue with the longevity of the Colosseum’s piers and arches, or Paris’ Sacre Coeur, both of which were made from travertine stone. So if you’re considering using travertine for your own garden, you’re ultimately making an investment in a material that is extremely durable and robust that will serve your garden for years to come.

2.  There is a Travertine for Everybody

Travertine is available in a range of finishes and colours. Is your garden a desert oasis? Choose a sandy tone. Perhaps you prefer a chic monochrome look? Go for dark greys. Ask your landscaper to see samples of the various tones so you find the right shade for your space. It’s also a good way to explore the various finishes that can be achieved with travertine. While it is cheaper than marble, a polished finish can be applied to the stone so that it stills feels luxurious.

3. It Keeps it Cool

Travertine is considered as a ‘cool’ stone. This means that it doesn’t heat up after hours of exposure to direct sun. Great for those hotter months spent lazing around the pool. Especially if you have little ones that love running barefoot in the garden, you can rest assured travertine won’t scald those tiny feet.

4. It’s Super Versatile

As mentioned, travertine is available in a plethora of natural tones and finishes. But its versatility goes beyond that. It can be a great option for building statement features for your outdoor space such as villa cladding, decking and seating areas, or used for finer details like water features and pools.
